III ECPD INTERNATIONAL SPECIALIST SEMINAR
SYSTEMIC FAMILY PSYCHOTHERAPY
WITH THE MAIN TOPIC

FAMILY INTERVENTIONS
IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF FAMILY LIFE

(Belgrade, 18.-22. September 2023)

European Centre for Peace and Development University for Peace established by the United Nations is organising this specialist Program focusing on the importance of education in different aspects of family life and different types of family interventions. The main goal of the Seminar is to improve understanding of functional and dysfunctional family systems, given that at this moment we are facing very serious problems: divorce rate is increasing rapidly, child abuse is one of the most serious social problem in the contemporary world, sexual abuse of children occurs primarily within the family, family violence is increasing dramatically and youth suicide is often related to family dynamics.

The Program Director and leading lecturer is Prof. Dr. Mila Goldner Vukov, member of the Royal Psychiatric College of Australia and New Zealand and one of the founders of family psychotherapy in South East Europe.

The seminar is internationally and nationally accredited. By the Health Council of Serbia the Seminar is accredited as a National seminar of the 1st category with 12 points for lecturers and 6 points for participants. The accreditation number of Seminar is А-1-304/23.

Dysfunctional families are sometimes hidden in “nice wrappings” of the narcissistic family systems or families with authoritarian parents and family dynamics that create children who become a danger to society. In order to recognise the different types of families, we have to be educated in how to assess family functioning and to understand better the differences in functioning of male and female brains in order to educate partners better in the process of couple therapy. Taking into consideration biological and psychological differences, partners can use biological and social skills for better communication and problem solving.

Getting to know the complexity of family dynamics in mother - daughter, father -son and siblings relationships will help the professional people to adjust their interventions when working on the improvement of those relationships.

Family interventions are very important in perinatal psychiatry, in problems with fertility and especially in psycho-oncology. Our focus is primarily on the positive aspects in family dynamics using the concepts of positive psychology. Contemporary psychiatry uses a positive approach in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, which focuses on strengths and solutions and less on the identification of problems. The positive psychiatry concept is applicable in mental health as well as in somatic conditions. Positive psychiatry with a focus on positive family therapy is highly recommended for children and adolescent. Positive family therapy which is based on positive psychology and family systems therapy is highly recommended in dealing with family and couple problems.

Family interventions have one more important goal which is to improve the individuals and family’s resilience. When a family is resilient, the majority of problems that are the result of family dynamics or those deriving from cultural and societal milieu can be solved on a more functional level.
